Psalm 84:10 … I had rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God, than to dwell in the tents of wickedness.
The picture that is being portrayed is of one who stands at the door of the house of worship and is never permitted to enter, which is far better compared to dwelling among the wicked and their ways. Just to be present in the place of worship of our God, which is minimal, is better than dwelling in the most lavish of places in wickedness. Those of us who trust in the saving and keeping power of Jesus Christ will whole-heartedly agree with that statement. However, how often do we find ourselves away from where God wants us to be spiritually, seeking after the peace that only the presence of Jesus can bring? Yes, we still have our flesh and sin nature that we must live with, but when the choice presents itself to turn away from wickedness to Christ, or indulge our sinful flesh, we must remember the reward each presents. The pleasures of the flesh last for a very small time and then need to be renewed. The rewards of the presence of God are peace and contentment with Him alone. The next time the enemy presents what sounds like a “good excuse” for not choosing to spend time in the presence of God, either through Bible reading and meditation, prayer, church, or fellowship with other believers, remember the reward you will either obtain or forfeit.
